The sink and faucet are the workhorses of any kitchen, so don’t skimp here. I have a deep 40 cm single basin sink made of fireclay, which is tough and easy to clean. The faucet is a pull down model with a magnetic docking system, so it clicks back into place every time. The spray head has a button that switches from stream to a powerful rinse, perfect for blasting stuck food off plates. I also installed a soap dispenser in the counter, which saves counter space and looks cleaner than a bottle. The garbage disposal is a half horsepower unit that handles most scraps, but I still compost vegetable peels in a small bin under the sink. That bin gets emptied every two days to avoid smells. The real trick is having a dish drying rack that folds flat and stores in a drawer. My counter stays clear when not in use, which makes the whole kitchen feel less cluttered.

Another layer I added recently was a voice assistant that controls the overhead light and the smart plug for the reading lamp. I was skeptical at first. Do I really need to say "turn on the sofa light" when I could just reach out my hand? But the moment it clicked was when I was lying on the pull-out sofa with a heavy book on my chest, and the velvet upholstery was so comfortable that I did not want to move. I said the command, the lamp came on, and I kept reading. That kind of laziness is exactly why the smart home works for small spaces. You remove the friction of getting up. And when you have a bed with storage that requires lifting the entire mattress to access the space underneath, the less you have to move, the better. The gas pistons on my bed frame make it easy, but you still have to clear the pillows and duvet first. So I added a smart button beside the bed that operates a small strip light inside the storage compartment. Press once, the light turns on. Press again, it turns off. No fumbling in the dark for a stray pillowc

The biggest hurdle I faced with the smart home concept was the wiring. My apartment has old plaster walls and no neutral wires in most of the light switches. So instead of replacing switches, I bought smart plugs and battery-powered motion sensors. The sensor near my front door, for example, triggers a lamp on a side table whenever I walk in with groceries after dark. That same sensor is set to ignore motion between 11 PM and 6 AM so my cats do not set off the lights when they run past. For the sofa bed in the living room, I use a similar sensor. It is placed on the wall behind the sofa, aimed at the floor. When the sofa bed is folded out, the sensor detects the change in distance and triggers a slow fade-up of a small LED strip mounted under the sofa frame. That gives just enough light to navigate to the bathroom at night without blinding the person sleeping on it. No fumbling for a phone flashlight. No stepping on a cat. The sofa bed itself has a foam mattress that is 12 centimeters thick, which is thinner than I would prefer, but the slatted frame underneath it adds enough give that guests have never complained. In fact, the foam mattress on the pull-out sofa has a removable cover that I can machine wash. That alone is worth the price of admission for anyone who has had a guest spill red wine on a co

The real challenge was integrating a bed with storage into the same footprint. I wanted a daybed that doubled as a bench, with drawers underneath for spare blankets and pillows. My local carpenter built a custom frame with two deep pull-out bins, each wide enough for a duvet and four pillows. The top cushion was a thick foam mattress covered in a washable cotton canvas, which resisted the mildew that crept in during damp winters. I added a slatted frame on top of the storage bins to let air circulate, preventing that musty smell that haunts closed-off spaces. The whole unit sat against the back wall, leaving room for a small desk and a potted fern. It was not glamorous, but it worked. Guests stopped complaining about cold drafts and started asking where I bought the setup.

about.phpThe materials you choose have to survive real life, not just magazine photos. My first counter was a polished granite that showed every water spot and crumb. I replaced it with a leathered finish that hides fingerprints and feels like stone, not glass. The backsplash is handmade subway tile with slight variations in color, which means I don’t panic when a splash of tomato sauce lands on it. For the floor, I went with large format porcelain tiles that mimic wood. They’re warm underfoot with radiant heating but don’t warp like real wood would near the sink. The grout is epoxy, not cement, because I learned cement grout stains within a month. One mistake I see often is choosing open shelving for everything. It looks great until you have mismatched tupperware and a stack of takeout menus. I keep only my favorite ceramic mugs and a few cookbooks on the open shelves. Everything else lives behind doors or in deep drawers.

The sofa bed taught me another lesson. Most people assume a sofa bed is a compromise, a piece of furniture that does neither job well. But with the right materials, it can pull double duty without apology. I replaced my old frayed fabric model with one featuring velvet upholstery. Yes, velvet. It sounds impractical, but modern velvet is stain-resistant and surprisingly durable. It adds a rich texture that makes the whole room feel more intentional, not like a college dorm. The fabric also hides wrinkles and pet hair better than cotton or linen. When the sofa is folded out for guests, the velvet feels soft against bare legs. And during the day, it gives the apartment a cozy, slightly luxe look that elevates the entire apartment interior design. One friend thought it was a vintage piece that cost three times what I p
