You know that feeling when you walk into a bathroom that was clearly designed by someone who never had to store a hairdryer or share a mirror with a partner? I do. For years, I lived in a flat where the bathroom was basically a closet with plumbing. The sink had no counter space, the shower curtain stuck to my legs, and every morning was a game of Tetris with toiletries. But here is the thing. That tiny room taught me more about good bathroom design than any glossy magazine spread ever could. When you have only three square meters to work with, every centimeter has to earn its keep. You start asking real questions. Do I need a medicine cabinet or can I hang a floating shelf? Can the towel rail double as a radiator? The answer is almost always yes, but only if you plan it before the tiles go in, not af

Let us talk about the feet. Kitchen ergonomics extends all the way to the floor. Standing on hard tile for an hour makes your knees and lower back ache. I installed a cushioned mat in front of the sink and another in front of the stove. They are thick, roughly two centimetres, with a beveled edge so I do not trip. My husband thought they looked silly, but after a week he admitted his sciatica had quieted down. The same logic applies to seating. If you have a breakfast bar, choose stools with a footrest. Dangling legs put strain on the lower spine. For the dining area adjacent to the kitchen, I chose a compact table and chairs that allow a full range of motion. The chairs have a slight lumbar curve, nothing exaggerated, just enough to support the natural arch of my back while I eat or w

Color temperature is another layer that many people overlook, but it can make or break the mood. I used to buy any cheap LED bulb until I realized that cool white light around 4000 Kelvin made my apartment feel like a dentist's office. Switching to warm white bulbs in the 2700 to 3000 Kelvin range changed everything, making the velvet upholstery on my armchair look richer and more inviting. For a bedroom or living area where relaxation is the goal, stick with these warmer tones. The only exception is a desk or kitchen task area, where a slightly cooler light around 3500 Kelvin can help with focus. But in the main room, consistency is key. If you mix warm and cool lights, the brain registers the dissonance and the space feels chaotic. I keep a stash of extra warm bulbs so I never have to settle for a cold replacement, and the result is a cohesive glow that wraps around the room like a blanket.

One problem that connects both rooms is how to handle guests without turning your home into a storage shed. I used to keep a spare duvet and pillows in a plastic bin under my bed. It looked messy. When I switched to a bed with storage, the bin disappeared. Now the bedding lives inside the frame, accessible through a panel at the foot of the bed. I did the same in the bathroom. Instead of having a basket of guest towels sitting on the toilet lid, I folded them into the drawer under the sink. The space was already there, I just did not see it because I was looking at the wrong level. The key is to measure not just the floor area but the volume of the room. From the floor up to the ceiling, every vertical face is an opportun

Storage in a small apartment is not just about hiding things, it is about making every item accessible without turning your home into a warehouse. I learned this the hard way when I bought a beautiful oak coffee table with a lift-top, thinking it would be perfect for storing magazines and remote controls. The lift-top revealed a shallow compartment, barely 5 centimeters deep, which meant I could only store flat items like coasters and a thin laptop. The real storage goldmine was the wall behind the door, where I installed a narrow shelving unit that was only 20 centimeters wide but ran from floor to ceiling. That shelf held my entire shoe collection, a few baskets for mail, and even a small basket for keys. The key was measuring the depth before I drilled, because a shelf that sticks out too far will block the door swing. I also added a magnetic strip on the inside of the kitchen cabinet door for knives, which freed up a whole drawer for spices and utensils. Every centimeter counted, and I started to see storage opportunities in places I had never considered before.

The link between bathroom design and the rest of the house is deeper than you might think. Both spaces demand that you acknowledge constraints instead of fighting them. In the bathroom, I could not pretend I had more counter space than I did. So I bought a mirror cabinet that opens to the side instead of the front, and I installed a magnetic strip on the inside of the door for tweezers and nail clippers. In the living room, I stopped wishing for a wall of built-in shelves and instead bought a modular system that hangs on a single rail. The furniture does not touch the floor. That tiny gap makes the room feel larger, just like floating a vanity off the bathroom floor does. Visual tricks work everywhere. You just have to use t
